Arkansas Pro Bono Legal Information, Resources and Assistance

Arkansas Pro Bono General Overview: Pro bono services are provided mainly by three organizations: The Center for Arkansas Legal Services, Legal Aid of Arkansas (LAA), and The Disaster Legal Assistance Project.

The Center for Arkansas Legal Services and Legal Aid of Arkansas: jointly provide free legal services to low-income Arkansans in non-criminal cases, ranging from family to consumer and housing to individual rights cases. The Center serves 44 counties while LAA serves 31 counties. The vast majority of clients contact the program through a statewide toll-free HelpLine, jointly operated by the two programs. Once financial eligibility is determined (guidelines for income and assets) and a case opened, services may include:

  • Advice aimed at empowering the individual to resolve his or her own problem (71% of completed cases)
  • Brief service where an attorney or paralegal provides limited assistance to help the individual resolve their problem (e.g., send a letter or make a telephone call)
  • Full representation where a staff attorney or volunteer attorney from the private sector represents the client (21% of completed cases)

In addition, the two programs also deliver services through their statewide website and community education, including clinics, workshops and the Online Legal Library.

The Disaster Legal Assistance Project: Victims of tornadoes and other disasters in Arkansas can receive free legal assistance through the Disaster Legal Assistance Project with the Arkansas Bar Association. Among the types of legal services available through the Project are assistance with insurance claims, counseling on housing problems, replacement of Wills and other legal documents destroyed in the disaster, drafting of Powers of Attorney, and referring individuals to local or state agencies. It is best to call between 1:00 and 4:00 p.m. during weekdays.
