Maryland Pro Bono Legal Information, Resources and Assistance
The Maryland Judiciary recently created the Maryland Access to Justice Commission to make and implement recommendations to expand access to the state’s civil justice system. The Commission hopes to enhance the quality of justice in civil legal matters for persons who encounter barriers when dealing with the courts or trying to solve a legal problem.
Maryland pro Bono Summary: The Pro Bono Resource Center of Maryland, Inc. (PBRC) is the statewide clearinghouse and coordinator of pro bono legal services. The Center's mission is to promote equal access to justice by coordinating and supporting volunteer civil legal services, providing resources and support for legal advocates for the poor and promoting cooperation within the legal community. As a separate non-profit organization which supports the Maryland State Bar Association, the Center works closely with legal services providers and local bar association pro bono projects throughout the state to help recruit pro bono attorneys. Volunteers are referred to pro bono programs according to the providers' needs and attorneys' interest and expertise.
Maryland Volunteer Lawyers Service (MVLS) is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization that connects low-income Marylanders in need of civil legal assistance with pro bono attorneys. MVLS also provides free legal assistance to nonprofits working to strengthen low-income communities in Maryland. Individuals can call during intake hours, Monday through Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., to explain their civil legal problems to the intake paralegals. If the caller qualifies for free or reduced fee services, they will match the client with an attorney who has expertise in the areas of need. MVLS also provides free legal assistance to nonprofits working to strengthen low-income communities in Maryland.
