New Jersey Pro Bono Legal Information, Resources and Assistance

In law, the term Pro Bono generally refers to legal work that is done on a voluntarily basis as a public service. The American Bar Association rules of ethics recommend attorneys devote 50 hours of their time each year to pro bono work.

New Jersey Pro Bono Summary: Legal Services of New Jersey (LSNJ), an independent, non-profit organization, coordinates the statewide Legal Services system. LSNJ strives to ensure equal access to justice under law to all people of New Jersey, providing free legal assistance to low-income people in civil matters. Clients can access the statewide legal hotline which provides legal information, advice and referral to low-income residents of New Jersey with civil legal problems (criminal cases are referred). This service is provided at no charge but applicants must be financially eligible to qualify. The hotline handles all cases over the telephone and does not provide ongoing legal representation. All callers are screened for income eligibility prior to receiving services. The hotline is open from Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.(1-888-LSNJ-LAW) (1-888-576-5529).
