Ohio Pro Bono Legal Information, Resources and Assistance

In the Preamble to the Ohio Rules of Professional Conduct, the Supreme Court of Ohio emphasized lawyers’ obligation to engage in activities that promote the common good, including the provision of and support for pro bono representation to indigent clients.

Ohio Pro Bono Summary: The Ohio Legal Assistance Foundation was created by the General Assembly as a response to the growing need for legal services for Ohioans living in poverty. The Ohio Legal Assistance Foundation is committed to equal access to justice and works to assure that resources, programs and services exist statewide to serve the unmet civil legal needs of Ohio's poor. Ohio State Legal Services Association (OSLSA) is a nonprofit law firm founded in 1966 by the Ohio State Bar Association. OSLSA has a direct service component (Southeastern Ohio Legal Services) and a State Support Center (Ohio Poverty Law Center). OSLSA has nine direct-service offices that provide civil representation to low-income Ohioans in 30 Ohio counties. OSLSA acts as general counsel to Ohio's poor. Southeastern Ohio Legal Services (SEOLS), provides free legal representation to low-income clients in a number of civil legal problems. SEOLS does not provide criminal defense representation. SEOLS handles public benefits, housing, unemployment compensation, family, consumer, education, employment, health and other matters.

Pro Bono Awards:

The Ohio Legal Assistance Foundation Presidential Award for Pro Bono Service is presented annually by the President of the OLAF Board of Trustees to an individual, firm, or organization that has provided outstanding leadership in the delivery of pro bono legal services in the State of Ohio.
