Oregon Pro Bono Legal Information, Resources and Assistance

The Pro Bono Program promotes pro bono representation and encourages Oregon lawyers to support civil legal services programs by meeting the OSB Aspirational Standard for Pro Bono.

Oregon Pro Bono Summary: Legal Aid Services of Oregon is a non-profit organization that provides representation on civil cases to low-income clients throughout Oregon. In addition, three statewide programs provide services to farm workers, representation on Native American issues, and assistance with housing development. The mission of Legal Aid Services of Oregon is to achieve justice for the low-income communities of Oregon by providing a full range of the highest quality civil legal services.

Program priorities include:

  • Domestic violence
  • Public benefits
  • Housing issues.
  • The Oregon state government operates a child support program that is free and available to anyone who wants services. The Department of Human Resources is the agency in charge of the program. Cases are handled by the Department of Justiceís Support Enforcement Division and local district attorneys.

    The services provided by the state child support program include:

    • Locating absent parents through computerized data sources
    • Establishing paternity (identifying the father legally)
    • Setting a support order (for money and health coverage)
    • Enforcing a support order (for money and health coverage) through income withholding, tax intercepts, and other methods
    • Modifying a support order up or down (when circumstances change or at least two years have passed since the last order)
    • Collecting, accounting, and paying out child support funds

    Child Support Hotline: Statewide service of legal aid programs throughout Oregon that provides help to low-income persons who have problems with getting or paying child support. 1-800-383-1222 Monday 1:00 - 4:00; Thursday 9:00 - 12:00.

    Public Benefits Hotline: Statewide service of legal aid programs throughout Oregon that provides help to low-income persons who have problems with applying for or receiving public benefits such as Welfare, Food Stamps, or Social Security. 1-800-520-5292 Monday 1:00 - 4:00; Thursday 9:00 - 12:00.

    Pro Bono Award:

    The Oregon state bar annually presents the Presidentís Public Service Award for efforts in pro bono legal service to individuals or groups.
