Tennessee Pro Bono Legal Information, Resources and Assistance

As found in Tennessee Supreme Court Rule 8, Tennessee Rules of Professional Conduct 6.1, each attorney in the firm is free to determine how to fulfill his or her pro bono responsibilities. Pro bono service includes activities such as providing professional legal services for no fee to persons of limited means; public interest or charitable organizations; or other groups or activities whose purpose is improving the law or the legal profession. Pro bono service does not include non-legal volunteer activities; fee-generating matters which have become uncollectible; or unsuccessful contingency matters.

Tennessee Pro Bono Summary: The Tennessee Alliance for Legal Services (TALS) is a statewide non-profit organization that seeks to build partnerships to support the delivery of effective civil legal services for low-income and elderly Tennesseans. The goals of TALS are to establish a commitment to increased financial and advocate support for Tennessee legal services programs. The following programs receive federal funding through the Legal Services Corporation (LSC) and handle legal issues within their geographic service areas:

  • Legal Aid of East Tennessee
  • Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands
  • West Tennessee Legal Services
  • Memphis Area Legal Services

The Corporate Counsel Pro Bono Initiative was launched as a joint effort by the TBA Access to Justice Committee, the TBA Corporate Counsel Section and the Association of Corporate Counsel (ACC) to help foster a coordinated approach to pro bono work and support for the access to justice community by corporate counsel in Tennessee.

Pro Bono Awards:

Corporate Counsel Pro Bono Initiative Awards are annually presented to law firms and corporate legal departments selected for "best exemplifying extraordinary commitment to access to justice ideals, pro bono service and the Corporate Counsel Covenant of Service."
